New Google Privacy Policy

Google Now Accessing User Data from All Google Services

Another algorithm change likely to send shockwaves through the SEO community is the introduction of a new unified Google privacy policy due to be launched in March. Basically this means that Google will combine information from signed-in users from one product to other Google products in order to show more relevant search results and ads.

What does this mean?

Well the powers that be at Google describe the main change for users with Google Accounts. The new Privacy Policy will make clear, that if you’re signed in to your Gmail account, then Google may combine information you've provided from one service with information from other services. In basic terms, Google confirm that they will treat a single user across all their products, which will mean a simpler, more intuitive Google experience.”

Google is also reducing more than 60 other privacy policies for all its products that include search, YouTube, Gmail, Calendar. The reduction of the privacy policies will see down the privacy policies condensed into one main “simplified” easy-to-read policy as of March 1.

There Has However Been Some Fierce Opposition

As with any change at Google, there are always hotly debated issues with such changes. Privacy concerns have been quickly highlighted. The European Commission is proposing to significantly enhance the protection of consumer privacy and therefore Google will need to be absolutely transparent about the data they capture and how it is used," Nick Pickles, director of privacy and civil liberties group Big Brother Watch has told V3.co.uk. "This goes beyond search and includes email scanning, location data from phones and Google +1 activity. Only when consumers have confidence in what data Google is collecting and using will simplified policies not be seen as an attempt to avoid scrutiny."

“Google’s new privacy announcement is frustrating and a little frightening,” Common Sense Media chief executive James Steyer told the Washington Post. “Even if the company believes that tracking users across all platforms improves their services, consumers should still have the option to opt out — especially the kids and teens who are avid users of YouTube, Gmail and Google Search.”

The key to this privacy policy is that you are providing everything Google knows about you. And Google is telling you right up front about it.

As for “kids”, Google requires users to be 13 or older in the U.S. to create a Google account, while Google+ users must be 18 or older.

“There is no way anyone expected this,” Jeffrey Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, a privacy advocacy group, also told the Washington Post. “There is no way a user can comprehend the implication of Google collecting across platforms for information about your health, political opinions and financial concerns.”

Serendipitous search is where Google is going. And that’s exactly what this quote, from the same Washington Post story, sounds like Google is moving closer toward:

"The move will help Google better tailor its ads to people’s tastes. If someone watches an NBA clip online and lives in Washington, the firm could advertise Washington Wizards tickets in that person’s Gmail account.

Consumers could also benefit, the company said. When someone is searching for the word 'jaguar,' Google would have a better idea of whether the person was interested in the animal or the car. Or the firm might suggest e-mailing contacts in New York when it learns you are planning a trip there."

Should you trust Google to not cross that line? Well, perhaps in your mind they already have. Just remember, Google has been much more than a search engine for years now. Ultimately, Google is an advertising company driven by making money, and users are the product they’re selling to advertisers.

That can’t be said anymore. Google is telling everyone when they sign up that any information they submit to Google while logged in can be used with other Google services.

Also Google has made no secret that it wants people to be “more logged into Google” – even before the launch of Google+.

Another Barrier for the SEO community

It really is just another move by Google to boost their advertising revenues and better tailor their ads to target consumers through analysing personal data about your searches and behaviour across all their products.

For the SEO community it is another barrier. The most recent algorithm change was if a user is signed in, then any data concerning their search is now kept secret in Google analytics data. Keyword data is hidden in analytic reports and recorded as “not provided”. Many SEO’s were predicting that this percentage of this data would increase. Initially it was about 2% now rising to 10%. The updated privacy policy and Google pushing for more users to be logged in when they search is only fuelling their concerns.

What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". On the internet, it provides a method to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and sometimes content to a wide number of people throughout the online community. It is used by computer programs that organize those headlines and notices for easy reading.

  • The benefits of RSS

The majority of people who use the internet are only interested in websites where new content and changes are made on a regular schedule. These may include websites that are news sites, community blogs, religious organization information pages, product information pages, medical websites, and weblogs. The advantage of RSS takes away the tedious chore of constantly checking each website to see if there is any new content.

  • How does RSS work?

The process of RSS works by letting the website author maintain a list of notifications on their website in a standard way. This list of changes and notifications is called an "RSS Feed". When you find an interesting website where the content is updated regularly, you can sign up to the RSS feed and receive notifications on the latest headlines or changes.

For example many SEO companies will sign up to many feeds including the Google blog, SEO Moz and econsultancy where updates, news, controversial topics, tips and professional views  within the online community can be accessed daily through notifications.

This keeps leading SEO companies such as Goy Media abreast of what is new and important within the industry whilst also making sure that we are ahead of the game. The same rule will apply for our clients websites where they may run a daily blog providing regular new content featuring product updates, special promotions and industry news allowing their customers to receive notifications as and when changes are made.

There are specially designed computer programs which are called "RSS aggregators" and these are developed to automatically access the RSS feeds of websites that a person may care about. The RSS aggregators or RSS readers then organize the results. Most website templates powered by word press and CMS now provide this feature. The majority of websites now provide access to an RSS feed such as the BBC being a good example.

RSS is set up to provide very basic information when it notifies you. Normally it will be a list format where items are presented in order from newest to oldest. Each item in the RSS list will usually consist of a simple title describing the item along with a more complete description and a link to a web page with the actual information being described. Sometimes this description is the full information you want to read (such as the content of a weblog post) and sometimes it is just a summary.

The RSS information is situated on a single file on a website in a manner similar to normal web pages. The information is coded in the XML computer language for use by an RSS aggregator programme.

RSS aggregator programs

A RSS aggregator works similar to a web browser for RSS content. RSS aggregators automatically analyse RSS feeds for any new items on a continual basis, which makes it possible to keep track of changes to multiple websites without needing to tediously read and re-read each of the websites.

RSS aggregators detect any additions to the website that has been signed up to the RSS feed and they then present them all together in a compact and useful manner. Readers can quickly check the title and description of an item to see if it is of interest, then they can simply click the link to be brought instantly to the related web page for reading.

Here is a screen shot of an RSS aggregator in action. See the list from the RSS feed being monitored, along with an indication of the number of unread items in each feed.

It will also provide a quick view of the article and a link to the actual article on the website that you have subscribed to.

  • There are many RSS aggregators available. Some are accessed through a browser, some are integrated into email programs, and some run as a standalone application on your personal computer.
  • It is now very common for websites to have RSS feeds and they can be a great way of promoting websites content and of course acquiring links and exposure. The orange button with the letters "XML" or "RSS" is what people can then click to sign up to an RSS feed.
  • Maximising your website with good content and regular updates which also provides information that is useful to people will be a key component in having readers subscribe to your RSS feed.

PART 1 - From Zero to Hero! The road to SEO success

Join us on a journey from nowhere to top of the pile for our target terms and we will show you how!

One of the easiest ways to tell if your are being approached by a reputable internet marketing company is probably pretty obvious to most. Do a search in Google for their company and what they do and where they do it.  Guess what, if they don't come up then it's a good bet they aren't any good right?

We can't find you so you have NO IDEA what you're on about!

Well not necessarily. Many of the top agencies don't dominate the first page for the big SEO terms as you may think.  But that doesn't mean they don't have an amazing list of very happy clients who rank extremely well for very competitive terms.  It can be because of brand recognition, referrals and word of mouth.  If you do a great job in what we do, you tend to get recommended.#

So is GOY Media a big agency with lots if clients or just not very good?

Well neither are true.  Right now we have a bunch of happy clients but we also have the capacity for many more and expect to grow significantly over the next few years.  Our clients have come about through recommendations and relationships and not from people searching for our services.  But that we intend to change right now.

So this is the ground zero bit.  We don't rank for anything (yet)

This is an admission I'm prepared to make as it's true.  We won't hide behind it and are happy to tell you this.  Why?  Because we will now start to do our thing and PROVE that our techniques work.  It is my personal opinion that if someone is to trust your ability, you have to show that you can do it.

Bring on the challenge and let's get started!

This case study is a record of our journey from Zero to Hero (well not hero but where we want to be and it rhymes).  We will show you the terms we are targeting, where we rank, what activity we do and what progress we make.

Hold on, you'll tell us what you do?!

Of course.  There is nothing secretive about what we do, nothing to hide, nothing shady to report I'm afraid.  But it does take technical skill, experience and some time and effort for sure.  It will take some investment too, but if you are reading this then feel free to take some notes and see how you get on with your own SEO.

So now the journey begins, we hope you tag along for the ride...

Where we are now & target terms: 18th Nov 2011

Keyword Phrases (KWP):

'internet marketing company aylesbury' - position Google UK = NOWHERE

Well this is what we do and where we are currently based, so although perhaps not the most competitive terms in the world it's definitely a relevant start. Let's see hwo we get on.  Join us next week for Part 2 and a report on progress and what we have do.

What is Link Baiting

Link baiting is the process of adding bait or a hook to attract back links. Generally good content on a site that people are searching for will be an example of Link Bait. It actually means something unique or interesting on your website that would want others to link to it.

In the SEO world, a hook or bait is usually referred to link worthy content written for websites, online articles and blog posts and then submitted on popular sites.

Other example of Link Bait is tools, widgets and other useful online applications. As with all good SEO strategies, content will be written with importance on the title tag which will serve as attractive bait to the audience.

Link Bait - Link-Worthy Content

This refers a piece of content on a website that has been created with the primary goal of promoting it to a broad or niche web community. The goal of this content is to find people who will find value in the material and write about it or importantly link to it. This could be through social media sites, news portals and blogs. One example of this could be a beginner’s guide to SEO.

At Goy Media, we have a daily blog where posts like this one are published on a daily basis alerting our clients of new developments in the SEO community and the World Wide Web. Also creating training and learning resources on learning SEO. This would be a perfect example of Link Bait or Link Worthy Content.

Link bait - Attracting Link Attention with Controversy

These link baits tend to be negative or derogatory pieces, controversial stories or news, inflammatory material, or anything else that is designed to incite or provoke a reaction from with the online communities or blogs.

There are several baits or hooks that are commonly used which include

  • Resource Hook:

Example: A complete beginner’s guide to online marketing

These are hooks generally provide useful resources to the audience and will gain incoming links.

  • News Hook:

Example: Google hides referral data

These hooks generally bank on providing the latest stories following a particular news item.

  • Contrary Hook:

Example: Aaron Wall to become the MD of Google

A contrary hook looks will focus on providing views contrary to an established or perceived school of thought. This could be something controversial.

  • Attack Hook:

Example: Alex Ferguson sued for match fixing

This is quite similar to the contrary hook but seeks to be more provocative, direct and upfront in nature.  This can be the strongest of all hooks and will command the most links if the news is worthy and credible.

It is extremely important to ensure that for the contrary hook and the attack hook it is advised to make sure that the facts are properly checked and corroborated before the post/article is published.

  • Humour Hook:

This type of hook seeks to bring in some aspect of humour into the daily mundane lives of people. As a hook it can turn out to be very.

The Power of Link Baiting

  • Create content that is highly entertaining and remarkable
  • The content then is published on the web and gains popularity
  • Successful link bait can increase inbound links, brand awareness and traffic to your site

Google has just launched Google+ Your Business, which is a set of tools and products that will now help businesses to get closer to their customers. The foundation of Google + for your business is the Google+ Page which will provide your business’s identity on Google+.

Google see Google+ Pages as a means of businesses being able to build deeper relationships with their customers allowing them to share their thoughts, links, photos and promotions with the right people. This could be a company offering a behind-the-scenes look at their product team in action? Or a chosen monthly sale or promotion?

Google has announced that the unique feature of Google + 1 for businesses is that you Get live with your customers, and have face-to-face feedback by holding multi-person video chats with customers all over the world.

Make lasting connections online with your customers

The Google + for your business has various tools that are driven to making lasting connections with customers which is of course the main goal of this new Google product. The Google + for your business covers 3 main areas which is Share, Promote and Measure.

1. Share

Communicating live with your customers and developing relationships with live chats in real time

  • Hangouts

Have real conversations with the right people: Hold Hangouts to chat with your customers face-to-face and use Circles to share specific messages with specific groups of your followers.
Hangouts let businesses set up one-click video conversations with customers and colleagues alike. As soon as a customer is online they are able to connect with a business and chat to a representative. From a business perspective, you can get face-to-face product feedback, help customers with any enquire or queries that they may have or simply get to know personally. Another feature of hangouts is that you can collaborate with remote colleagues on shared documents in real time through all high-quality, easy-to-use video chat.

  • Publish Posts

This feature allows businesses to communicate with their customers once they have landed on their page. One highlight is that you can use your Stream to post any relevant content, or upload photos and videos, and communicate with followers directly by asking questions that start discussions. Businesses can also make posts public so that potential customers can find them using search, or another way is to use Circles to tailor specific messages to specific followers. Circles are similar to face book groups where a business can categorize people.

  • Manage Circles

There will be many different people who are interested in different parts of your business. This could be breaking news or live updates, company promotions, links, photos or communicating face-to-face with groups via easy-to-use video chat. The feature of Google+ lets you as business easily share the right things with the right customers.

2.Promote

The promote feature of Google + 1 allows businesses to promote their site and their Google+ page. A business can promote it them self using Google+ Direct Connect or the Google+ badge. People can recommend your business with the +1 button.

  • Google+ badge

This allows businesses to connect their website to their Google+ Page by adding the Google+ badge to their site which then promotes their company to customers. The badge   connects their site to their Google + page. This is an enhanced version of the +1 button and has several features.

  • Be able to +1
  • See personal annotations,
  • Add your page to a circle directly from your site
  • Install the Google+ icon which allows people who like your site to click the icon, where they will be taken to your Google+ page. Here they can add you to their circles, and be able to follow your posts from then on.
  • Google+ Direct Connect

Direct Connect lets potential or existing customers enter '+' followed by the name of your page in Google search to get directly to your Google+ page.

  • +1 recommendation

People often turn to friends and family for help making decisions. The +1 button allows friends and family to recommend your business by +1

  • Connect your +1's

This feature allows businesses to connect+1s for their website with +1s for their Google+ page and ads. Businesses need to create their page and put a snippet of code on their site.

  • +1 on search

In the Online marketing world, a recommendation is good for any business and a recommendation from a friend is even better. The +1 annotations in Google search help promote these recommendations. When customers are searching for information, with +1 on search, the logic here is people visiting your site will see the +1s are more likely to stick around.

  • +1 button sharing to Google

This is where businesses will install the +1 button on any of their web pages. Here when a visitor to your page clicks a +1 button, your specific content is shared on Google+ allowing people to discuss it with friends and reshare on social networks.

3.Measure

A big part of the SEO world and an integral function at Goy Media to running any successful SEO campaign is to ensure that we analyse data effectively.   Google’s measurement tools form a big part of the Google + your business tool and allow us and you to see what people are saying about your business, how many +1's your business has received and very important, how these are affecting your traffic.

  • Ripples

Ripples will let you see your posts spread across Google+ and who is sharing and resharing your content.

  • Social Analytics

Analytics measures +1's and your engagement on your site.

  • Analytics on a Page

This includes important data such as Google+1 activity, who’s interacting with your page and how, your users’ demographics and info about their social activities like +1's, shares and comments.

Google + your business with Goy Media. We are offering a full Google + your business set up as part of our local SEO start up package. This is new product by Google but will prove to be an important tool in the months ahead as the search community begin to see Google +1 as a vote of confidence for businesses and their products and services. The ability to engage with customers in live chat will be a vital component as social media becomes a more prominent platform for customers and businesses to engage with their customers in real time.

Keyword Research An Overview

A fundamental aspect of any SEO campaign is carrying out effective keyword research. This is a key element of on page optimisation. The initial step in the process of formulating a keyword strategy is to brain storm and research the targeted keywords that are relevant to your market niche. At Goy Media when we carry out an SEO audit, we will also carry out some in depth keyword analysis to identify the keywords that our potential client is already targeting.

We also use a variety of tools and assessments to identify other keyword opportunities that are competitive and that will also drive targeted traffic. It is important to ensure that we have a list of core terms or ‘money terms’ that are relevant and popular search terms that potential customers will use to look for what you offer. These keywords will be the most competitive to rank for but will drive the most traffic to the site. Initially identifying a core list is a good starting base.

Keyword Research | Building A Successful Strategy

  • Be Realistic

There are many useful tools to use when carrying out keyword research with the Google keyword tool being the most widely used. Generally a good technique can be to identify and target the top keywords with high search volume. These high competition keywords can however be very hard to compete for unless you have a good budget or have employed a leading SEO company such as Goy Media.

A good tip for smaller businesses that are starting out can be to target less trafficked and less competitive keywords. Targeting these keywords will help to build up your rankings and overtime it will be easier to then compete and rank well for the more generic and competitive keywords.

  • Using the Google Keyword Tool

When using the Google keyword tool, it is important to look at the search volume which is of course a very important metric when it comes to keyword research. One common mistake not to make is using broad search volumes instead of the exact match figure when using tools like Google's Keyword Tool. A typical example can be that every month there are 132,000 broad matches for dog leads but 14,000 exact match searches for the same keyword.

Using exact match gives you the best data available when assessing how viable a keyword is to target. The Google's Keyword Tool isn't entirely accurate when it comes to search volumes but it is a free tool that can be a good starting base for anybody new to keyword research. There can be a huge difference between broad match and exact match search traffic so using the exact match is the best solution.

  • Singular and Plural

In many cases a website will be targeting the plural version of a keyword even though in most circumstances, it is the singular version of a keyword that people are searching for. Targeting both is a good strategy by starting to target the singular followed by the plural.

  • Targeting Keywords that Convert

A good keyword strategy will target keywords that are converting well. For example there would be no point in having a keyword bringing lots of traffic to the website if that traffic is not converting into sales.  The online world of internet marketing is very competitive and it's only going to get more competitive. Search engines are now becoming more advanced and user’s behaviour is forever evolving. It is very important to have industry experience and SEO knowledge when looking at keywords that are going to convert.

There are some very basic indicators for example prefixes such as 'buy' might be a sure indicator that the traffic from this keyword is going to convert.  At Goy Media, one method that we use to identify keywords that will convert is to run a PPC campaign. The analytics data will show the click through rate and conversions. In some cases we have had keywords that are ranking no 1 and driving lots of traffic to the site but there are very few conversions.

In other cases we have had keywords ranking lower with less traffic but the conversion rate is much higher. In this case it is important to analyse and to interpret the data and make effective SEO decisions. Analysing data effectively is a major component in successfully building a good keyword and SEO strategy.  It is generally perceived that what works for PPC will normally work for Organic search. Having goal tracking setup with Google Analytics is an easy way to determine the highest converting keywords your site currently gets traffic from.

  • Select Keywords that are focussed and not out of Context

There are many opportunities for confused targeting and people that use a broad term could be looking something completely different. It is therefore essential that the keywords you decide to target are highly-relevant and much focused towards what your business offers

  • Keyword Review

Regular keyword reviews are essential to any business as markets shift, new opportunities arrive, search engines become more advanced and customer search behaviour develops. At Goy Media we are constantly keeping ourselves ahead of the game and trying out new techniques. We will target clusters of keywords focussing and optimising on a group at a time whilst researching new opportunities. Reviewing keyword performance and analysing important metrics such as search volume, competition, conversion and bounce rate are important factors.

Google News – A New Approach to Advertising

There has been some news that Google is about to take what it calls "a whole new approach" to search advertising, which is the heart beat of its massive revenues.

Those familiar with the AdWords program will know that is was always driven by "keywords, keywords, keywords," BarisGultekin product management director has said that this won’t change exactly, but Google has announced a new alternative.

This will be called Dynamic Search Ads. The traditional approach for an advertiser has been to create a campaign by bidding to run ads alongside specific keyword searches. The new initiative will see advertisers just point AdWords toward the pages that they wish to promote. This will then see Google match the ad with the best searches and then generate an appropriate headline. Google has only just announced the program today, but it has been in the works for the past two-and-a-half years.

The philosophy is that Google is basically redesigning AdWords from the ground up as quoted by Gultekin. Behind the scenes Google is "flipping the search engine on its head." Now Google is not just taking a keyword and finding relevant pages, it will now take a page and then match it to the best keyword.

BarisGultekin product management director has said that Dynamic Search Ads are in a limited beta test, and Gultekin has also acknowledged that early advertisers want to make sure that they don't have to abandon their traditional keyword campaigns. Gultekin has foreseen that this could potentially represent "the future" of AdWords,. According to Google, it is a more natural way to think of ads.

Currently any business wishing to start with a product or Web page that they want to promote, will have to come up with a long list of relevant keywords.

Dynamic Search Ads provides an alternative as Google can take "the middle layer of keywords" out of that process. This will certainly have many SEO companies rethinking their SEO strategies.

According to BarisGultekin, this also makes it easier for advertisers to adapt their campaigns to limited promotions and limited supplies, because the new program will kill any campaigns pointing to pages that display an "out of inventory" message.

Google Making Search More Secure:

Accessing Search Query Data in Google Analytics

Google is forever making changes to its algorithms and at Goy Media, we are constantly adapting our SEO techniques to facilitate such changes. Search is rapidly becoming a more customized experience which is particularly relevant for signed in users.

Googles latest change has seen them look to offer more protection for these personalized search results. As part of their effort, the Google Search team has recently declared that SSL Search on https://www.google.com will now be the default experience for signed in users on Google.com.

This measure has been implemented to protect user privacy though from an SEO perspective there are repercussions which will now affect the search data.

How will this change impact Google Analytics users?

When a signed in user now visits your site from an organic Google search, all web analytics services, including Google Analytics, will continue to recognize the visit as Google organic” search. What will happen is the Google will no longer report the query terms that the user searched on to reach your website.

What is the impact?

Each month at Goy Media we analyse data from Google analytics which provides us with a breakdown of the website visits and the keywords that were searched for to drive that visit to the website. What will happen now is that if a user is logged into Google at the time, we will no longer receive the search query term and it will show up as not provided. This obviously leads to a loss of some important data, but is something that the SEO community must embrace and overcome. The change will affect only a minority of your traffic.

What is Google Analytics doing about it?

Google is still measuring all SEO traffic and will still provide conversion rates, segmentations, and more.

Google has ensured that to identify the signed in user organic search visits, they have created a token called (not provided) within Organic Search Traffic Keyword reporting.

On our monthly reports, the not provided token will now show up a long side all other keywords giving us a % figure for the number of users that were signed in.

Local SEO - Good Practices

At Goy Media we specialise in local SEO for small businesses who are looking to rank competitively in their in targeted geographical area. We have underlined a few valuable points required for any small business to be successful at SEO. The checklist outlines just some practices that can help improve local SEO for small and local businesses

  1. We register your business with major search engines including Google, Bing and Yahoo. No point having a great website if nobody can find it.

  2. It is important for local SEO to register and add your website to the list of local major search engines and local listing sites which include Yellow Pages, Yahoo Local, CitySearch and Yelp to name just a few.

  3. At Goy Media we will also list your website on Key Local Sites that have listings for local businesses. These are normally media sites and news publications where we can list local businesses.

  4. One essential factor for a successful local SEO campaign is to carry out competitive research on your competitors identifying what listing sources and directories they are using for your keyword. We then look to achieve a listing for your business in the same directories as well as our unique directory portfolio that we use here at Goy Media.

  5. Review your customer comments and product reviews on all the listing sites. It is important to check the local directories and listings for customer reviews once they have purchased a product or service from your site. Here we can gather useful information on customer feedback and make sure that we act upon this to make the customer experience even better. Many potential customers will first check out what other customers have said about your business, products and service before making a purchase.

  6. Audit the Websites usability, accessibility, and content. This is critical to any successful local SEO campaign. Once customers visit your website, making sure that they find what they are looking for easily and quickly is very important. One metric that we can use to measure the success of this is bounce rate.
